The Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) in San Francisco offers a variety of supportive housing programs. It collaborates with various service providers to provide secure, affordable housing coupled with support services to individuals facing homelessness. These programs prioritize people with disabilities or a history of chronic homelessness, offering them resources to improve their living conditions and achieve self-sufficiency.
San Francisco also has numerous federal and state subsidies to assist those in need. The Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly known as Section 8, is a significant federally funded program that allows low-income families, elderly, and disabled individuals to afford safe housing in the private market. San Francisco has stringent rent control policies to protect tenants from excessive rent hikes and arbitrary eviction. These laws apply to several residential units in the city that were built before June 13, 1979. According to these policies, landlords cannot increase the rent beyond a specific percentage each year.
