The state of Alabama presents a variety of supportive housing options designed to serve individuals and families facing different types of challenges. While there are a number of federal programs offering housing assistance across the United States, the primary ones utilized in Alabama are the Housing Voucher (Section 8) program and Public Housing. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) oversees these programs, providing financial aid directly to needy families and individuals, enabling them to secure affordable, clean and safe housing.

These establishments offer medical attention and day-to-day care, fostering an enhancing living environment for the residents.
A significant option among these is the HUD-funded Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program. It provides direct loans for housing development, facilitating the provision of supportive services for low-income elderly residents. Additionally, Section 811, the Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program, offers resources toward building, rehabilitating, or buying rental housing for this vulnerable segment.
Alabama also has programs to provide housing support to its homeless population. The Continuum of Care (CoC) Program, funded by HUD, promotes community-wide commitment to prevent and end homelessness. It provides funding for permanent housing, transitional housing, supportive services, and rehousing services.
